Mandaue approves measures to protect meat sellers

CEBU, Philippines – To protect vendors selling local meat, Mandaue City will impose additional tax on imported meat sold at the Mandaue City Public.

This after the city council approved two ordinances stating such a tax on imported meat. The measures were authored by Councilor Jimmy Lumapas.

Aside from the ordinance imposing additional tax for every kilo of imported meat, Lumapas also authored another ordinance which reduces the gate fee for one whole hog.

Hog suppliers at the city public market previously paid P30 for every one whole hog sold inside the public market.

But in the recently approved city ordinance, hog suppliers will now only pay P15 for every hog sold inside the public market.

Lumapas said he came up with the ordinances after market vendors and hog suppliers complained about cheap imported meats being sold in the public market.

To protect their interests, Lumapas filed the ordinances.

Both ordinances were approved during the council session last week. Its implementation will take effect 15 days after the ordinances are posted in local dailies. (FREEMAN)
