Traffic body wants more bite in anti-barker law
CEBU, Philippines – The Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM), in its desire to purge the streets of jeepney barkers, will ask the city council that the anti-dispatching ordinance be amended to include the raising of the penalty to be imposed on violators from P200 to P2,000 plus imprisonment.
TEAM's head Edwin Ermac said the barkers have become brazen.
On the other hand, Mayor Jonas Cortes said the city will be hiring additional traffic enforcers.
The mayor said those who will be hired are those who have earlier volunteered to help in traffic management.
"Busa kinahanglan inig hire, trained na sila daan," Cortes said.
Ermac said his office has been accepting volunteers who have indicate interest in helping direct traffic.
As soon as they learn the ropes, the volunteers will be the first to be hired by the city whenever the need for them arises.
Presently, Mandaue has 160 enforcers in all but Ermac said the city should have at least 260 to 300 trained men to man the streets. (FREEMAN)
