Mandaue buys motorcycles for police

CEBU, Philippines – The Mandaue City government has purchased 17 motorcycles, which will be given to the police and some income-generating departments at the city hall such as the slaughterhouse.

Mayor Jonas Cortes said the money used to purchase the motorcycles came from the allocation set aside in the 2009 annual budget. The Honda XRM-125 Dual Sports motorcycles, bought from Emcor, each cost P59,900.

Cortes said it will take a long time for the police to get assistance from the PNP national headquarters.

Aside from providing the police with vehicles, the city and MCPO will soon come up with a memorandum of agreement which will indicate that the city will shoulder the expenses for spare parts and maintenance of all vehicles coming from the PNP national headquarters.

Cortes said a MOA is needed so that they cannot be held liable by the Commission on Audit.

City Police director P Sr./Supt.Noel Gillamac said he was glad by the support the city has extended to the police.

Gillamac said the motorcycles will be turned over to the City Public Safety Company which is the new name for the former City Mobile Group.

He said aside from the mobile patrol cars, the motorcycles would be used to respond to alarms being fuel efficient and could easily be maneuvered through narrow streets.

Gillamac said while six of these motorcycles will go to the City Public Safety Company, four will be sent to the Traffic Division of the MCPO.

He said he has already issued a memorandum to the Traffic division directing their office not to focus only on traffic investigations but also help go after criminals in the streets. (FREEMAN)
