2,000 applicants at CICC jobs fair

CEBU, Philippines – Of the more than 2,000 overseas jobseekers who trooped to the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City yesterday, only seven have been assured of employment abroad.

Peridot International hired on the spot seven skilled workers for deployment in different countries in yesterday's Overseas Jobs Fair initiated by the Provincial Government of Cebu.

Julius Chua, Capitol public employment service officer-designate, said that the rest who were hired by participating agencies are still subject for approval by their employers.

Chua said that Peridot International had with them their employer so they were able to hire on the spot the qualified applicants.

He said they still have to consolidate this morning all reports of participating agencies so they could determine the actual number of hired applicants.

There were 33 agencies who participated in yesterday's overseas job fair. It was the third and the last overseas job fair the Capitol PESO is initiating this year.

Chua announced that on December 5, 2010 there will be a local jobs fair to be held at CICC. It is also the third and the last local jobs fair the Capitol PESO is initiating this year.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration takes charge of inviting agencies for the overseas jobs fair while the PESO is the one inviting agencies for the local jobs fair.

Chua has called on local jobseekers to start registering at their office at the Capitol as early as now.

Applicants need to bring their credentials to pre-register at Capitol PESO or at the venue on the day of the jobs fair.

Chua earlier said that 18,000 positions awaited jobseekers in yesterday's overseas job fair.

There were 17,617 job vacancies during the overseas job fair last Aug. 8, when 27 licensed agencies participated.

More than 2,000 jobseekers also attended in the said overseas job fair. (FREEMAN)
