2 University of Cebu grads top Marine Engineer exams

- Rene U. Borromeo -

CEBU, Philippines – The University of Cebu again produced two topnotchers in the latest Marine Engineer Officers Licensure Examinations conducted by the Professional Regulations Commission in Manila a few days ago.

UC President Augusto W. Go said he was proud to learn that Allan P. Mariveles, 37, of Sto. Rosario Village in barangay Jagobiao, Mandaue City, placed sixth while Jeffrey G. Cavalida, 36, of Labangon, Cebu City landed in the seventh place.

The officials of the Professional Regulations Commission announced that of the 1,759 who took the Marine Engineer Officers Licensure Examinations from all over the country, only 1,057 of them passed.

Both Cavalida and Mariveles are now holders of second engineer licenses, one more step closer to becoming marine chief engineers.

Go said the university will reward the two.

His policy is that the university will give a car to anybody who will become topnotchers in the Bar exams, but he will only give a vehicle to the first placer in the licensure examinations in other courses.

The first placer in the recent Marine Officers Engineering Licensure examinations was Ernesto Viray Jr., from the Philippine Maritime Institute in Quezon City, followed by Ericson Ofiana from the Technological Institute of the Philippines-Manila.

In third place was Bonifacio Bodiongan, a product of the Palompon Institute of Technology in Palompon, Leyte, who tied with Allan Cohit from the Philippine Merchant Marine School in Las Piñas.

Aside from UC and Palompon Institute of Technology, the John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation in Iloilo City is the other school in the Visayas that produced top-notchers, Emmanuel dela Cruz and Francisco Calanta, who landed in the fifth and eight places, respectively. (FREEMAN)
