Filling materials at Naga plaza cause stir

- Ria Mae Y. Booc -

CEBU, Philippines – Some residents of barangay Tinaan, Naga complained after 20 to 30 truck loads of filling materials for a road construction project leading to the controversial Balili property was dumped on the basketball court, which is part of the municipal plaza.

Mayor Valdemar Chiong said he has been receiving complaints from the residents since last week asking when the filling materials or "anupog" will be taken from the basketball court.

"Since Wednesday or Thursday na gibutang diha and probably there are few complaints but more of them okay ra," he said.

Chiong said he already inquired from the Provincial Engineering's Office, but he was not given a definite schedule.

"I called to ask the schedule of work but wa pa sad sila kahibalo," Chiong said.

The existing barangay road estimated at 300 to 400 kilometers will be widened starting from the portion near the Apo Cement property until near the shoreline leading to the Balili property.

He added that the residents also worried that the municipal plaza will no longer regain its present state if it will be affected by the construction.

"They are wondering also nga gub-on ang plaza unya dili i-restore ug balik but dili mana ingon ana kay kung unsay naguba ibalik mana ug restore," he said.

Chiong expressed concern that there is nowhere else to hold municipal events if the plaza will not be usable for a long time because of the presence of the filling materials.

"If dugay pa ang trabaho nganong gidam-ukan man dayon that is why I want to know the time frame kay dili man pud mi ganahan mabalda ang kalingawan sa mga tao," he added. (FREEMAN)
