ERUF recognizes Hermie Cortes

CEBU, Philippines – As the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF) celebrates its 24th year, the nongovernment organization gives a plaque of appreciation to its operations and train-ing director, Mr. Herminio Cortes for his outstanding service.

Cortes, son of former Mandaue City mayor Democrito Sr., is considered the forerunner of the rescue operations in Cebu. He used to work for a private company, which sold a used van to the Mandaue City Government which later served as the first rescue van in the country.

He formed the then Mandaue Rescue Unit.

In yesterday's ceremony, Cortes thanked the Eruf members for the recognition.

Cortes added that the success of Eruf could be attributed to its having the "right people" in the organization.

Also yesterday, Eruf revealed of their plan to put up two headquarters. One will rise at the South Road Properties (SRP) and another will be constructed beside the Parkmall in Mandaue City.

Dr. Pe Keng Lim, ERUF chairman, said they are targeting 2012 as year of completion.

The headquarters at the SRP will have a land area of 2,000 square meters while the one in Mandaue will sit on a 5,000-square meter land.

Relying on donations both from members of the board and other countries, Eruf also plans to put up a trauma hospital, a helipad, a paramedics school and a lounge for their gatherings.

They are currently training volunteers to respond to all kinds of accidents and calamities other incidents. Their training in assisting patients follows international standards. (FREEMAN)
