Wanted man shot dead

CEBU, Philippines – A wanted man was shot dead after he allegedly exchanged gunfire with personnel of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-7 yesterday dawn in sitio Calo, Barangay Kahumay-humayan, Danao City.

Senior Inspector Ricky Neron of the CIDG-7 told reporters Gelacio Villanueva, alias "Boboy", a resident of Corte, Carmen town, was wanted for shooting dead a secu-rity guard of a farm in Carmen town.

Neron, yesterday dawn and other CIDG-7 personnel went to the suspected hideout of Villanueva after they received a tip he was there and found he was with two other men.

They further said that they called Villanueva and identified themselves as policemen but Villanueva fired at them, giving them no choice but to fire back.

Villanueva was fatally wounded while the other two escaped. The police brought him to the hospital but he was already dead when they got there.

Last September 29, 2006 Villanueva was able to escape from the Carmen Police Station after he allegedly shot dead farm security guard Emiliano Mejares in Barangay Corte. He was later recaptured but escaped again on March 2008. - Mylen P. Manto and Mellanie Rosales, correspondents/BRP (FREEMAN)
