Mandaue takes steps to help special children

CEBU, Philippines – The Mandaue City council has approved an ordinance on first reading which seeks to give special children as well as persons with disabilities twenty percent discounts on purchases of necessities and prime commodities.

The proposed ordinance states that the enactment of the ordinance is the city government's concerted and determined effort to address the special needs and concerns of special children.

Mandaue City Councilor Demetrio Cortes Jr. said this legislative act is contemplated to cater to the needs of special children, not only to alleviate their peculiar predicament but also to as-suage the plight of the parents.

Cortes said a more comprehensive and continuing program is being drawn up to provide more appropriate and meaningful benefits for these special groups of young people.

The city councilor said his proposed ordinance aims to rectify Republic Act 9442, the Magna Carta for Persons with Disability.

With the approval of the ordinance, it will be called a Grant of Discounts to Persons with Disability on the Purchase of necessities and prime commodities pursuant to Section 32 (j) of Re-public Act No. 9442, otherwise known as the Magna Carta for Disabled persons and other Purposes. (FREEMAN)
