Man killed, dad hurt by dynamite blast

CEBU, Philippines - A young man was killed after the back of his head was blown off while his father suffered extensive injuries after they tried fishing with dynamite in the seawaters off Barangay Tominjao, Daanbantayan Tuesday morning.

Earlier, Dexter Yaun, 22, and his father, Nicasio, 46, put out to sea intending to get a big catchs.

PO2 Edwin Dignos of Daanbantayan Police said Nicasio’s wife told them that the victims, who were both fishermen, were actually not dynamite users.

However, before the two left for the sea around 8 a.m., Nicasio talked with her as to how could they catch plenty of fish. That day, they were expecting visitors for the town fiesta.

The two then went to the house of Nicasio’s friend to get the dynamite. They then put out to sea some 200 meters away from the shoreline.

A couple of hour later, residents of the barangay and the neighboring barangays heard a loud explosion.

When some residents came to check they verified it, they saw Dexter on the boat already dead while Nicasio also suffered serious injuries to the head, torso and right arm.

Police suspect Nicasio was handling the dynamite when it exploded.

Residents rushed Nicasio to the Daanbantayan District Hospital, he was later transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City because of his critical condition.

“Tagaan usa siguro unta nila og pahalipay ang ilang mga nahibiling bisita, mag-sugbaay ba kaha ron, mag-sutukil. Sila na man nuon ang na-sutukil,” Dignos said. -  THE FREEMAN
