Police shot man accused of extortion
CEBU, Philippines - After he resisted arrest and attempted to shoot at a police team, a man who was reported to be extorting money was shot in the leg by policemen in Sitio Kalangyawan, Barangay Napo, Carcar City yesterday morning.
Drivers of motorcycles-for-hire complained about the extortion activities of one Ambrosio Baran, who allegedly asked them for money every time they pass by the area.
The drivers told barangay tanods about it, and it was the barangay tanods who sought police assistance.
A team from the Regional Public Safety Battalion 7 responded at around seven o’clock yesterday and found Baran, 24 years old, and a resident of Sitio Danicop, Guadalupe, Carcar City.
Desk officer PO1 Gilmar Noval said that Baran was drinking with his friends Dennis Canape and William Diapana when the police arrived.
The police claimed that Baran resisted and even tried to shoot them, so PO1 Roger Gasco Castillo shot his right leg.
The suspect was immediately taken to the Carcar District Hospital and was later transferred to the Vicente Soto Memorial Medical Center.
The police recovered a revolver and five live ammunitions from Baran. They also seized P410 believed to be proceeds of his extortion activities.
Noval revealed that Baran used to be in jail for theft, but he was released after posting bail, and that his victim never pursued the case.
Baran will be facing a complaint for illegal possession of firearms. (FREEMAN NEWS)
