Fewer dengue cases this year in Lapu-Lapu

- Jose P. Sollano -

CEBU, Philippines - The Lapu-Lapu City Health Office yesterday said the number of dengue cases from January to August this year was lower than the number registered in same period last year.

City Health Officer Dr. Rodolfo Berame in yesterday's regular briefing at city hall said four deaths were recorded this year as against six deaths last year.

Berame said that last year of the same period, his office recorded 319 cases of dengue compared to 97 cases of the same period this year.

He said the clean and green program of the city government under the administration of Mayor Paz Radaza has contributed to the decline of dengue cases in the city.

The city health officer said that in order to intensify the campaign against dengue cases, his office initiates a massive information and education campaign on dengue prevention such as the observance of the four o'clock habit, destroying breeding places of mosquitoes with the use of lavicidal solution, salt water, and used cooking oil.

Berame said barangay and school dengue brigade has been reactivated.

The city govern-ment has also initiated a strict implementation of Republic Act 9003 in every barangay with barangay captains issuing citation tickets to all households not complying with the proper disposal of waste and stagnant water. (FREEMAN)
