CEBU, Philippines – One of the two detainees that bolted the Lapu-Lapu City Jail last June 26 was shot, captured, and taken to hospital yesterday.
Rolando Amistad was shot in the leg for refusing to surrender.
Amistad ran out of his house when he saw jail personnel approaching and to stop him from escaping, JO1 Constancio Pantolino shot him in the leg.
He was taken to the Lapu-Lapu City District Hospital.
Residents of barangay Agus tipped the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) last Wednesday of Amistad's return to the place after almost two months of hiding from the day he and Alfie Lopez scaled the concrete fence of the jail.
Amistad, 27, has a pending case of illegal possession of unlicensed firearms, while Lopez, 28, for robbery.
They staged the jailbreak when every detainee was busy making circular blades. Jail detainees make circular blades for a private company that are to be exported.
The city jail has an area of 1.7 hectares and houses nearly 800 detainees. Thirty of them were picked to work on the livelihood program offered by the firm.
Following the escape, JO1 Darwin Dinela was grounded. He had claimed of drowsiness that day and had not noticed the two scaling the fence.
Alarm was sounded only after a roll call of the 30 detainees.
Jail Warden Isabelo Cartin said Dinela is not off-the-hook yet even with the recapture of Amistad. Lopez is still at large. (THE FREEMAN)
