City eyes letting future scholars undergo psych test

CEBU, Philippines – The city government plans to implement a new set of guidelines in granting scholarships to high school graduates from public schools who will be entering college next year.

Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young, former city councilor and consultant on education, said yesterday those who will be availing of financial assistance from the city will be made to undergo a psychological exam to guide them in choosing the right course in college.

Young said a psychological exam will help gauge a student's capacity to face the challenges of the course he/she intends to take. He said this is necessary so that a student will not be wasting his/her time in school and land in jobs that are not in line with their chosen profession.

Young further said a psychological exam would also help evaluate a student's capacity by determining the areas he/she excels in.

"Nindot gyud nga ang kuhaon nila nga kurso kay magamit gyud inig graduate nila, maong mo agi pud ni sila og guidance counseling aron atong mahibaw-an kung asa kutob ang ilang makaya pero depende pud na sa career pathage sa studyante ", said Young.

Aside from this, the city also plans to evaluate universities here to determine if their college programs and the standards they adopt adhere to the demands of the times.

Young said the city also plans to open a separate office that would cater exclusively to its scholarship programs. This way, the concerns of the scholars can be addressed properly and promptly, he said.

As of this year, scholars from schools in mountain barangays receive P20,000 each while those from within the city proper receive P10,000 each. The amounts, however, are being given through certificates to ensure that the money will go straight to the school.
