Mandaue council kills opposition councilor's proposed resolutions

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - The majority bloc of the Mandaue City council ignored the proposals made by opposition Councilor Editha Cabahug during last Wednesday's regular session.

Cabahug is now the only opposition councilor in the council after Councilor Emmarie "Lollipop" Ouano Dizon joined the administration party of Mayor Jonas Cortes whose councilors compose the majority bloc.

During the session, Cabahug introduced four resolutions.

But when it came for her to move for the approval of the resolutions, none of her colleagues acted on the proposals, prompting her to appeal to the council to set aside politics and instead look forward for the welfare of their constituents.

Cabahug first introduced was the immediate implementation of Ordinance No. 11-2009-534 which provides for the establishment of an Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking in the City.

However, none of the councilors seconded her motion for approval.

Cabahug at first did not react to the "cold treatment" she got from her colleagues when her first resolution was denied.

But when she presented her three other resolutions namely the recommendation for the construction of a separate legislative building for the legislative branch , the immediate implementation of the ordinance providing for the establishment of a youth holding facility, and halfway house for children in conflict with the law, and the installation of an intersection traffic and other safety measures along C. Ouano Avenue, none seconded her motion for approval.

In reaction to this, Vice Mayor Glenn Bercede told the body that her resolutions are "deemed killed."

She again appealed to her colleagues to set aside politics telling them not to break their promises to their constituents made during the campaign period.

"Let's forget the past and work hand in hand for the service of the Mandauehanons," Cabahug said.

Cabahug said that although she got the cold shoulder treatment, she was not angry at all because she was just doing her job.

"I hope my colleagues will do good for the city ug wagtangon nang political affiliation. Dili sila angay nga mangige because I'm a hands on councilor.   Nag research ko ug nagpaminaw sa panginahanglanon sa katawhan," Cabahug said.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
