Structures designed for PWDs sought

- Leslie dela Cruz /LPM -

CEBU, Philippines - An official of a Cebuano foundation has said that Cebu should have structures designed for persons with disability (PWDs).

Adela Cono, president of Avila Foundation, said during a forum yesterday that although some establishments here have ramps, there should be structures like showers, toilets, swimming pool, sidewalks, pedestrian bridges, among others, that are PWD-friendly.

“Disability is not just all about ramps,” Cono told those who attended the forum held at Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) conference hall

“Sa Istrakturang Accessible, Lahat ay Able” was the theme of year’s forum, which tackled structures that are PWD-friendly. The event also aims to promote the accessibility of PWDs towards a barrier-free environment.

Cono called on establishments, government agencies and the community to be advocates of a “barrier-free tourism” for the benefits of the PWDs.

According to Cono, there are many PWDs who want to visit Cebu but it has only few structures or services for them.

The forum was part of the activities the DSWD is conducting on its celebration of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week.

A barrier-free tourism orientation will be held around 10:a.m. tomorrow at SM Conference Room. — THE FREEMAN
