Rama bats for electrification of coastal areas

CEBU, Philippines – Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama asked the Visayan Electric Company and barangays officials to work on plans for the electrification of houses of poor families living in coastal areas in the city.

This after Rama observed that areas along coastal barangays that are occupied by the poor are so dark, saying some of these barangays are Ermita, Suba, Pasil and Sawang Calero.

A tanod of barangay Ermita confirmed that many of their residents, particularly those living in sitio Bato (back of Carbon market Unit-1), do not have electrical connections.

“Mao na nga ang uban diha mo-resort na lang og pangawat og kuryente. Mag-amot-amot na sila para makapalit og electrical wires nga gamiton nila pagkonektar direkta sa poste,” he said.

Rama believed that even a poor family can afford paying the bill for a single light in their home. “Gamay ra kaayo ang gasto sa usa ka bombelya nga suga.”

But Rama failed to elaborate on the program as it is yet to be discussed by the VECO and barangay officials.

He said the city has been known as the Queen City of the South, but still “darkness looms in some areas of the city and the more that the concerned residents can produce babies.” (THE FREEMAN)
