Hospital offers explanations for "runner's" predicament

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - A psychiatrist of the Mandaue City District Hospital has presumed that the man who was taken to the hospital after collapsing during a footrace and who later jumped off the hospital's window last Saturday night could have suffered from hypoxia, or the lack of oxygen in the brain.

Or hypoglycemia, or the lack of sugar in the blood due to too much exercise.

At past 11 p.m., Alexander Landera arrived at the hospital appearing to be gasping for breath and without blood pressure.

Dr. Edwin Menguito said a patient suffering from hypoxia experiences delirium, disorientation, is disturbed, agitated, and violent.

Menguito said Landera more likely was suffering from hypoxia rather than hypoglycemia since he experienced unconsciousness but after almost an hour he became hyper-active.

"It was hypoxia most likely kay nakuyapan siya because kuwang na ang oxygen sa brain pero nabalik siya sa iyang kaugalingon but he didn't have enough oxygen sa brain," said Dr. Menguito.

Dr. Oscar Quirante, the city hospital director also said that it was least likely that the patient experienced hypoglycemia since the ailment weakens the person but in this case he was hyper-active.

Landera had blank stares, deep eyes, cannot maintain eye contact, was incoherent mumbling "asa ang finish line? (Where is the finish line?)", "ngano ang mga pulis dili mutug-an asa ang finish line? (Why won't the police tell where the finish line is?)," "asa ang inyong mayor kay akong patyon? (Where is your mayor I will kill him?),"Quirante said.

The family of the victim turned over the cadaver to the PNP crime lab for autopsy.

The Energizer Night Run drew 2,500 participants for the 3k, 5k, and 10k category with prices of P10,000 for the first placer, P5,000 for the second placer, and P3,000 for the third placer.

Manila actor and actresses joined the race.

Registration fee was P350 and part of the collected fees went to the Kapuso Foundation of GMA 7 for its program for indigents with impaired hearing.

Alexander Landera was a member of the Danao City Runners Club and joined the Energizer Night Run last Saturday night.

A police report said that when the hospital staff was about to carry Landera to the emergency room, he suddenly stood up and ran inside the hospital.

He passed the emergency room and slammed into the glass door of the delivery room, and then proceeded to the adjacent recovery room where he took the table of the suction machine, stood on it, and jumped out of the window.

The incident happened at 11:26 p.m. or almost an hour from the time Landera was left on the ground outside the hospital's entrance by Acert personnel.

Hospital personnel immediately sought police assistance, which was recorded as "alarm and scandal."

A nurse who refused to be named said that Landera was running fast inside the hospital and personnel could not catch up with him before he rammed a door glass.

She said it was suspected that Landera wounded left arm when he rammed the glass door of the delivery room. (FREEMAN NEWS)
