Wounded moon fish washed ashore, dies

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - Some residents of barangay Looc in Mandaue City found a 100-kilo Moon Fish floating under the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge being washed ashore yesterday morning.

Jovanni Famor, an Aqua cultural technologist, said the Moon Fish, considered an endangered species, weighed 100 kilos.

The fish, with a big wound on the head, was already dead when brought to shore.

Famor said he will invite Biology students from the University of San Carlos to find out whether the fish can be preserved.

The BFAR does not have the equipment and a supply of formalin to preserve fish.

Famor said if the fish can no longer be preserved, it will be buried in the vacant lot of the City Agriculture Office in Mandaue City.

Famor said it was the third time that a Moon Fish had been washed ashore in Cebu. In the past, two Moon Fish were found near the shores of Lapu-Lapu and Talisay cities.
