Policeman arrests food attendant who "threatened" him over rice

CEBU, Philippines - A policeman placed a food attendant under arrest for allegedly embarrassing and threatening to stab him while he was about to have lunch at an eatery inside the South Bus Terminal.

The incident happened at R.E.D. Enterprises midday last Sunday.

PO2 Melchor Baroro Mangompit of the Provincial Police Office said he was prompted to arrest Jay-R Quijote Yumol, 25, because the latter allegedly threatened to stab him in front of the other eatery’s other customers.

The incident started when Yumol allegedly refused to sell rice to Mangompit reportedly because the policeman bought his viand from another store. Yumol also allegedly told Mangompit to just buy rice from where he bought his viand.

The police was allegedly heard saying, “Pulis ko. Tagae ko’g consideration” to which Yumol answered, “Ngano man diay kung pulis ka? Kung unsa imo gusto mao sab ako. Huwat diha kay kuha ko’g armas, dunggabon taka.”

Mangompit then arrested Yumol for unjust vexation and for threats considering that several other persons were around and the suspect threatened him as a police officer. Mangompit was off duty at that time.

Mangompit said Yumol allegedly resisted and disobeyed he was trying to restrain and handcuff him. He only reportedly subdued the suspect when some bus drivers and porters intervened.

Mangompit took Yumol to the Carbon Police Station where the latter is temporarily detained pending the filing of charges against him. Mangompit intends to charge Yumol with unjust vexation, threats, and resistance and disobedience to a person in authority. (THE FREEMAN)
