DepEd: No pilot schools in Cebu for sex education

- Rene U. Borromeo -

CEBU, Philippines - No public elementary and high schools in Cebu that will be piloted in the implementation of sex education.

Department of Education regional director Recaredo Borgonia said that there are only three towns in Central Visayas that were identified as pilot areas for the program. These are the towns of Dauis, Buenavista and Loboc all in Bohol.

Borgonia said nine elementary schools and nine secondary schools from these municipalities have been identified to pilot the program.

Borgonia however failed to explain why out of the four provinces in Central Visayas, Bohol was chosen as the pilot area. According to him, the regional office has nothing to do with the selection of schools where the experimental sex education is to be implemented.

Some city officials are happy over the report that none of the 105 public schools in Cebu City was included.

Councilor Arsenio Pacaña is opposed to the program saying that exposing the tender minds of elementary and high school students to sex education might only lead to further experimentation that would result to unwanted pregnancy and abortion.

Borgonia assured that the program does not include teaching the students of the actual sexual intercourse. He explained that the subject will be integrated in regular subjects.

DepEd Secretary Mona Valisno likewise assured that the controversial sex education will not be implemented without proper public consultation, particularly to the religious sectors, members of the media and other sectors of society.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
