INSTEAD OF SEX EDUCATION: Jonas to promote waste segregation

- Flor Z. Perolina -

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes is pleased with the announcement of Department of Education Secretary Mona Valisno that sex education will not be taught in public elementary and high schools this year.

Valisno, who was in Cebu City last Thursday, said that although the modules have already been received by the different DepEd offices, this cannot be taught yet to students until the department has met with parents and the religious sector.

Cortes, who is against the teaching of sex education in schools, yesterday said he would instead push for the teaching of waste segregation.

He said he will ask the city council to appropriate funds for this program.

Once waste segregation is taught in schools, he will urge teachers to encourage children to bring recyclable materials to school wherein they could swap these for so-called “ecological coupons.” Accumulated coupons can then be exchanged for school supplies.

In view of the opening of classes next week, Cortes has assured that barangay tanods would be at the disposal of school children.

Since the opening of classes coincides with the onset of the rainy season, he said Task Force Drainage has been cleaning the city’s drainage system
