Dawn fire in Busay kills 1

- Niña G. Sumacot-Abenoja -

CEBU, Philippines - A 28-year-old utility man died after a fire raged through his house in Barangay Busay, Cebu City yesterday dawn.

Jason Enriquez was trapped inside his house when the fire broke out at 1:00 a.m. yesterday. His charred body was later found during the mopping operations of the firemen.

Alfonso Sacamay, 50, victim’s neighbor, said he was awakened by a loud explosion before the fire broke out. When he went to check it out he already saw Enriquez’s house ablaze.

Sacamay said he immediately called for police and fire assistance but when the responding policemen and firemen arrive, the house was already reduced into ashes.

Initial investigation shows that the fire could have been caused by electrical short circuit. A radio report quoting the victim’s neighbor said that explosion could have been caused by an overheated appliance because Enriquez is reportedly fond of listening to music before going to sleep.

The fire department pegged the damage at P20,000.

Meanwhile, a security guard was found dead on a vacant lot at Gochan Compound in Barangay Mabolo yesterday morning.

Virgilio Lucero, 48, a security guard of King David Security Agency and resident of the place, was found dead by his neighbor on grassy area in the compound.

Winnie Tormis said he went out to a grassy area to answer the call of nature when he discovered Lucero lying on the ground unconscious. He then called his brother’s attention who is a fellow security guard of Lucero.

Initial investigation conducted by the homicide section reveals that Lucero was conducting a roving before he was found dead.

SPO3 Rey Cuyos said there was no single wound or indication on the victim’s body that would suggest a foul play. The police believe that Lucero could have died of hypertension due to high blood pressure while conducting a roving.

The police recovered a caliber .38 revolver without ammunition, a cellular phone, a wristwatch and a bunch of keys from the victim. Also recovered was a brown wallet with P200 bills, a security guard identification card, and assorted documents.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
