Guangxi officials in Cebu today to finalize pact with province

- Jose P. Sollano -

CEBU, Philippines - Government officials and representatives of the business sector of Guangxi Province (Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region) in China are scheduled to arrive today to finalize the sisterhood agreement with Cebu Province.

No less than Governor Gwendolyn Garcia will lead Capitol officials in welcoming Guangxi province Vice Chairman Chen Wu and his party.

Garcia said businessmen from Guangxi are reportedly interested to invest in Cebu, particularly on port development. The sisterhood agreement, she said, would simply augment the partnership of the two provinces in terms of economic development.

She said Guangxi has always considered Cebu as an ideal place to invest in because it is very accessible to neighboring provinces in Visayas and Mindanao.

Guangxi is one of China’s tourism centers and is also considered an economic hub. It is a forefront window to other Asian countries because of its accessibility through air and water travel.

In 2008, Guangxi increased its Gross Domestic Product by 2.8 percent. This year, its GDP has reportedly increased by another 13.7 percent while its assets have increased by 52.1 percent. These increases are reportedly attributed to the opening of economic zones thereat.

Guangxi also has three ports that boost the province’s trading with local and foreign investors. Cebu was among those that showcased its products during the Economic Summit in Guangxi last October 10, 2009.

Cebu has existent partnerships with Chinese provinces Guangdong, Sichuan and Hainan.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
