Potot: The city's name is spelled "Lapu-Lapu"
CEBU, Philippines - LAPU-LAPU City Councilor Rodolfo Potot, a member of the committee on education, in the last Wednesday afternoon's session, asked the city conduct an information drive that would correct the official spelling of the city, which is "Lapu-Lapu" and not "Lapulapu."
The city uses "Lapu-Lapu" as reflected in its letterheads and official documents.
Potot also wants restaurants, carenderia, eateries, food stands, and fish markets to change the name of the fish "lapu-lapu" to "pugapo."
"The correct and rightful name "Pugapo" shall be used to name the fish whose name was unwittingly changed to Lapu-Lapu by unknown sources sans sense of legal reason," Potot said, citing the existing ordinance approved in 1996.
Potot quoted the ordinance: "It is incumbent upon its people of Lapu-Lapu City to initiate, in whatsoever small measure, the movement of elevating Lapu-Lapu in the same corridors of honor and prestige occupied by known heroes like Rizal, Bonifacio, Mabini and others, with full belief that Cebu province, a stronger and higher counterpart, shall render full support."
Furthermore, Potot reminded that there is an existing penalty of P300 plus additional fine of P100 for every month of non-compliance. (THE FREEMAN)
