Notorious robber shot during arrest

- Niña G. Sumacot-Abenoja -

CEBU, Philippines - An alleged notorious robber was shot when he tried to evade from policemen serving the warrant of arrest against him in Barangay Sambag 1 last Monday afternoon.

Angelo Castello, 34, sustained a gunshot wound on the leg. Sr. Inspt. Michael Anthony Bastes, chief of the Fuente Police, also described Castello as an “akyat-bahay artist.”

Bastes also led the team that implemented the warrant against Castello. The warrant was issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Rafael Erastoso last November 1, 2009 for robbery and hold-up.

The warrant stemmed from the complaint of one Inie Dubduban, 29, a neighbor of the suspect, who alleged that Castello stole pieces of jewelry from her boarding house sometime last year.

Bastes said they first tried to convince Castello’s family to make him surrender peacefully, but the suspect did not heed and tried to escape by going up the roof of another house, prompting one policeman to shoot him. The first shot failed, but a second shot from another policeman hit Castello’s left leg just as he landed on the ground.

Castello is currently getting treatment at the Cebu City Medical Center. – THE FREEMAN
