Nerissa: Jonas not a good manager

- Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon -

CEBU, Philippines - Mandaue City mayoralty candidate Nerissa Soon Ruiz, responding to Mayor Jonas Cortes’ earlier boast that the city has savings amounting to P1.2 billion, yesterday likened her rival to a father who would rather starve his son or daughter in order to save money.

“Ang siyudad sa Mandaue daghan kaayo og problema sama sa mga dalan nga guba-on, mga drainage nga wala maayo, nagkatag nga mga basura ug uban pang mga problema nga naka-apekto kaayo sa revenue sa siyudad. Pero ang iyang gi-una ang pag-save sa kwarta sa siyudad nga gitagana sa iyang sunod nga termino. Dili kana sakto kay ang maayong pang gobyerno, ibalik man na nimo sa katawhan ang kwarta dili kay ibutang sa bangko,” said Ruiz who was the guest of the 888 Forum held at Marco Polo Hotel.

Cortes, who was also invited to the forum, failed to attend.

“Di na lang ko mahibung ana. Daghan nang mga forum nga kaming duha ang gi-invite pero pirme gyud na siyang dili mutunga. Ambot og unsa iyang gikahadlukan,” Ruiz said during the forum.

Earlier, city administrator Briccio Boholst said the city government has a total savings of P1.2 billion all set to be allocated to projects and will reserve its use once Cortes assumes his post after the elections without the opposition-dominated council.

Boholst, in a press statement furnished The Freeman said Mandaue’s first quarter cash daily report showed that the city has P1.227,588,556.54 deposited in various banks such as the Development Bank of the Philippines, Philippine National Bank and the Land Bank of the Philippines .

Ruiz, a congresswoman for 15 years, was surprised to know of such a huge amount.

“Dili gyud siya maayo nga manager. Kay dapat unta zero balance gyud na at the end of fiscal year,” she said.

Ruiz said a local government unit needs to satisfy the basic services of a city before saving.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
