Earth Day celebration set April 22
CEBU, Philippines - The regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will celebrate Earth Day on April 22.
The celebration centers on the need for the people to be aware of the environment.
This year will be the 40th celebration of the Earth Day, which was founded by US Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970. Philippines joined in celebrating Earth Day ten years ago.
“Our theme (this year) describes the need to put our acts together to address the impacts or effects of creeping climate change by campaigning to do something in (our) own personal way to mitigate climate change,” DENR-7 director Leonardo Sibbaluca said in a press statement.
Sibbaluca cited the planting of trees; conserving of energy and water; and reducing, recycling and reusing as simple ways that can help preserve the environment.
DENR-7 planning, information and education chief Rizalina Saberon said in a forum held yesterday that they are currently establishing a movement called the 10 Million Movement (10MM) as way of pushing the people to help save the Earth.
“10MM is not a signature campaign but a solution movement,” Saberon said, explaining that they are gathering 10 million acts or commitments for the environment.
Saberon said the DENR-7 had put up a signing up booth at SM City Cebu, which started collecting commitments since March 26.
“We will have programs and activities like film showing and photo exhibit. We will also try to have an acoustic band while having the exhibit so that the people won’t get bored while watching,” Saberon shared during the celebration.
She said they will also have a walk starting at 8 a.m. from Ayala down to SM City Cebu. (FREEMAN NEWS)
