CEBU, Philippines - An official of the Commission on Elections is asking candidates and their respective supporters to respect the observance of the Holy Week by not campaigning during this time.
Lawyer Enerio Ocariza, Election Officer of Danao City, said that for reasons of delicadeza, candidates should refrain from shaking the hands of people during the Holy Week, especially on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.
“For delicadeza, ayaw na lang pakiglamano sa mga tawo. Tagaan nato og respeto ang Mahal nga Adlaw,” Ocaiza said.
“Anang adlawa, angay sila hinuon maghinulsol sa ila mga sala aron inig ka-election, limpyo-limpyo sad gamay, di ba?” he added in jest.
He also asked candidates who would be invited as speakers during the Siete Palabras to, as much as possible, avoid shaking hands with the people, especially inside the church.
Ocariza said the law prohibits candidates from campaigning on April 1 and 2 during which Roman Catholics observe Holy Thursday and Good Friday.
Ocariza challenged the people to report to the Comelec or to the police any candidate they may see campaigning during Holy Thursday and Good Friday so that appropriate actions will be undertaken.
The complainant can also file a complaint before the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, Ocariza said.
He said any candidate who violates this provision may face possible disqualification.
The Holy Week falls within the campaign period for local candidates, which will start officially on March 26, but Comelec said April 1 and 2 are exempted.
