CHED urged to help LGU-run schools form consortiums
CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu provincial board is calling on the Commission on Higher Education to help colleges and universities run by local government units by setting up consortiums that would advance development and sharing of resources.
Board Members Juan Bolo and Julian Daan, the proponents of the resolution, said local government units that man colleges and/or universities in their respective jurisdictions may have difficulty managing the schools owing to limited experience on education.
These local government units “may have some constraints on their operations and academic functions because of limited educational experience of the administrators, lacking the necessary actions to develop, reinforce and recognize the necessary educational elevation,” the resolution reads.
Bolo and Daan said the failure of some LGU’s to address necessary educational concerns might endanger the achievement of quality education at levels of educational pursuit. They said manning colleges and universities require basic principles and foundations of education, most especially on the aspect of viability.
They said most of the students enrolled in these kinds of institutions come from families with lesser income.
“Students availing the privileges offered by the local government units in these LGU's managed colleges or universities preferred to have themselves enrolled therein because of cheaper tuition fees,” they said. - Jose P. Sollano/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
