4 men charged for assaulting policeman

CEBU, Philippines - Charges of direct assault and frustrated homicide were filed against four men for allegedly assaulting a policeman inside the police station of Tabuelan town last January 27.

Chavy Guitguit, 40; Jonifer Curaraton, 37; Miguel Bejano, 35; and Ernesto Dura, 36; all residents of Tuburan were accused of attacking SPO1 Amelito S. Alcala.

According to the affidavit of SPO1 Raymond Jugan and PO3 Nonato Mata, the four men were drinking in a videoke bar in Sitio Cuasi, Barangay Poblacion last Wednesday dawn when one of them argued with a store attendant over unpaid bills.

Mata and Jugan said that they saw Alcala having an argument with the four suspects outside the police station.During the confrontation, Dura allegedly punched the policeman.

Because of the strong blow, Alcala’s head hit the cemented walling, knocking him unconscious to the ground.

Alcala’s fellow policemen claimed that they even fired a warning shot to stop the mauling but they were ignored by the four, who were later on arrested and detained at the police station.

Alcala was rushed to the Tuburan District Hospital and was later transferred to a hospital in Cebu City.

The court recommended a bail of P12, 000 for each respondent for the charge of direct assault and another P24,000 each for the charge of frustrated homicide.— Jasmin U. Labaco/WAB   (FREEMAN NEWS)
