At least 30,000 in "Walk with Jesus"

CEBU, Philippines - Thousands of devotees of the Sto. Niño flocked to the streets for yesterday’s “Walk with Jesus,” the foot penitential procession of the Catholic faithful.

Participants began the walk past 4am at the Fuente Osmeña circle and down to Osmeña Boulevard towards the Basilica del Sto. Niño. Rev. Fr. Rodolfo Bugna, rector of the basilica, officiated the solemn mass that followed.

Also present during the celebration were 36 priests, Bishop Christian Noel of the Archdiocese of Talibon in Bohol, and Monsignor Cayetano Gilbolingo.

In his homily, Bugna called on politicians, priests, journalists, and the public to welcome Sto. Niño into their hearts and urged the youth to shun away from “earthly temptations” and follow the teachings of the Catholic Church.

He also reminded churchgoers for a “change in attitude” this coming May elections. He said the electorate should be responsible enough not sell their votes.

“Palihug walay vote buying,” Bugna said.

Likewise, he encouraged the Catholic faithful to share their blessings to the less privileged by engaging in charity works.

During the mass at the Basilica, The Freeman Chairman Jose “Dodong” Gullas and his wife Nena were installed as Hermano and Hermana Mayores for the feast of the Sto. Niño.

Meanwhile, City Police Director Patrocinio Comendador said yesterday’s procession was “very peaceful and orderly” with no crime reported. The crowd, estimated to reach over 30,000, also did not disrupt the flow of vehicle traffic. — Marjun A. Baguio, University of Cebu Intern and Niña G. Sumacot/JMO   (FREEMAN NEWS)
