Abelgas willing to run CCMC

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Medical Center emergency ward chief Edgar Abelgas went to Cebu City Hall yesterday to personally inform Mayor Tomas Osmeña that he is willing to manage the city hospital and do his best to improve CCMC’s performance if he is given the chance.

Abelgas, who was personally hired by Osmeña last September, said it is possible that some lazy employees of the 48-year-old city hospital will be affected if the mayor will let him manage CCMC because he wants all his personnel to work hard.

“Aw kon hatagan ko og higayon ni mayor Tom nga makadumala sa CCMC pahimangnoan lang nako daan kadtong mga ligoy nga empleyado nga mopadaplin lang sila kay basin og maligsan,” Abelgas said.

Osmeña said he will talk first with CCMC administrator Rene Sanapo about his plan to designate Abelgas as the new hospital chief as he sees no hope that incumbent CCMC chief Myrna Go can improve the hospital’s performance.

After Abelgas assumed as head of the CCMC’s emergency ward a few months ago he quickly implemented some changes including getting new personnel to work with him.

Even Sanapo said he observed that the services at the CCMC’s emergency ward had improved so much under the leadership of Abelgas that is why he has no objection if Osmeña will appoint him as the new hospital chief.

Osmeña said the lazy CCMC employees prompted him to toy with the idea of shutting down the hospital or selling it to any interested party, but when he learned that Abelgas successfully improved the hospital’s emergency ward he made plans to designate the latter as CCMC chief.

Abelgas proposed that the drugs and medicines that are intended for the emergency ward should not be placed in the central supply room but in the emergency ward so that it can be used immediately in case of needs.

He, however, admitted that there is still a need for additional budget for drugs and medicines. The record showed that of CCMC’s P140 million budget, only P14 million is allocated for drugs and medicines because the huge part of the budget goes to personal services and some other expenses. — Rene U.
