South district considered "hotly-contested area"

-

CEBU, Philippines - The city police have classified the city’s south district as a “hotly-contested area” owing to the highly anticipated face-off between Mayor Tomas Osmeña and businessman Jonathan for the congressional seat.

City Police Director Patrocinio Comendador said yesterday he is considering of augmenting police visibility in the area, albeit clarifying that the south district does not necessary fall under the same degree as other hotly-contested areas in the province wherein force is being employed to win the elections.

“Political rivalry lang (in Cebu City South District), dili intense political rivalry,” Comendador said.

Comendador said he will wait until Monday, the last day to substitute candidates, before coming up with the final list of hotly-contested areas in the city.

Comendador said that once the areas will be identified, these areas will be assessed together with the Commission on Elections. He said the police will work in tandem with the Armed Forces of the Philippines to maintain peace and order in these areas.

Still, Comendador clarified that areas that will not be classified as hotly-contested would still receive the same security from the police.

Police personnel would also be deployed at the Comelec offices.

So far, the CCPO has not spotted goons escorting politicians in the city. The hiring of goons by politicians is prohibited under rules and regulations of the PNP. - Niña G. Sumacot/JMO   (FREEMAN NEWS)
