PSC gives P100,000 cash aid to Gorres
CEBU, Philippines - As she turned 26, Datches Gorres has no other wish than to see his husband, Cebuano boxer Z “The Dream” Gorres, recover from a brain damage following a bout he won last month in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In an interview, Datches said she hopes that her family would wake up from this “nightmare” and see Gorres out of danger. Gorres is recovering in a Las Vegas hospital after undergoing a brain surgery.
Last Wednesday, Datches left for the United States to attend to her husband’s needs and was expected to arrive there yesterday morning. She thanked the Cebu provincial government for shelling out funds for her trip.
Before the unfortunate incident, Datches’ mother, Zurine Micabani, said Gorres promised that he would throw a party for his wife’s birthday.
But Datches wanted to save whatever money he would get out of his fight against Luis Melendez at Mandalay Bay.
Gorres also promised his kids – Dheybert, 7; Shylady, 5; Zhey, 3; and Coddy, six months old – to have a vacation in Manila.
Micabani said the latest on Gorres’ situation is that he can already sit down and responded when his wife and kids called him on the phone.
When the boxer fully recovers, Micabani said she would strongly advice his son-in-law to stop boxing and find another job.
Yesterday, Micabani, on behalf of Gorres and his wife, received a P100,000 financial assistance from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo through the Philippine Sports Commission.
The check was handed by PSC executive director and commissioner Fr. Vicente Uy and Paul Hubahib, head of the Central Philippines Super Region under the office of the Press Secretary at the Malacañang sa Sugbo.
“The President instructed us to provide financial assistance to Gorres, who has bannered the flag and country in his numerous fights even as a professional boxer. We sincerely hope that he will be able to recover soon and come home to his family in time for Christmas,” said PSC chairman Harry Angping in a press statement.
Fr. Uy said he is hoping that the Games and Amusement Board, which is handling professional boxing, will also help Gorres and his family.
After the turnover of check, Micabani, her sister Myla and Gorres’ children proceeded to Mandaue City to receive an additional P100,000 financial assistance.
Earlier, the provincial government gave P100,000 to Datches and promised that it would shoulder her plane ticket to the U.S.
It was also learned that Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and her brother, Rep. Pablo John, gave an undisclosed amount from their own pockets as additional assistance to Gorres’ family. — Caecent No-ot Magsumbol/LPM (THE FREEMAN)
