It is not a joke: Margot: I am going to run

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City First Lady Margot Osmeña reiterated her intention to run as councilor in the south district following the doubts raised by her sister-in-law Georgia Osmeña that the declaration was just simple posturing.

Margot said that she can do nothing about Georgia not believing her announcement.

The first lady, however, pointed out that she can’t prevent anyone to think otherwise, but she is determined to run for councilor in next year’s election.

“Nganong dili ko mudagan, magsulti-sulti lang ko unya maglingaw-lingaw lang diay, my husband asked me and encouraged me to run and I say yes, I don’t say yes and after two days I say no, dili man ni duwa-duwa ba,” Margot stressed.

She admitted that she was once a green card holder, but she gave it up even before her husband mayor Tomas Osmeña got sick last year.

This is in contrast to what Georgia claimed that Margot is a green card holder and that she doesn’t think her sister-in-law would surrender it.

Margot and Georgia are reportedly at odds and have not been in talking terms for the past several years.

On the other hand, Margot also laughed off the comments of former Senator John Henry ‘Sonny’ Osmeña, the estranged cousin of her husband, about her political plans.

The former senator said that fielding Margot for councilor is meant to “babysit” Vice Mayor Michael Rama if both of them will win.

Rama has been endorsed by the Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK) to run for mayor in tandem with Joy Augustus Young in next year’s elections.

Sonny foresees that Rama may become a scarecrow in a rice field with the presence of the first lady in the city council.

Margot jokingly said that Mike is no longer a baby that’s why there’s no need for her to do the babysitting chores for the vice mayor.

But mayor Osmeña was not amused by the statement of his cousin and described it as an insult to Rama and to his wife.

“Ayaw lang gamita ang statement nga mura ug yaya ba kay insulto man na kang Mike ug sa akong asawa,” Osmeña said.

Sonny defended his statement by saying that it is not an insult to Margot rather a compliment to the first lady.

“It’s a complement to Margot nga siya gituohan sa iyang bana unya ako niuyon sa pagtoo sa iyang bana nga si Margot maoy magbantay sa siyudad unya,” Sonny said.

The mayor said that his cousin is just envious of the vice mayor since the mayor is supporting Rama in the elections.

Sonny has declared his desire to run for a mayor and offered Tommy to be his running mate. The former senator even announced that once elected, he will immediately resign to give the mayoralty back to Tommy.
