CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City government yesterday started distributing plastic hoses and empty drums to farmers of the city’s mountain barangays to be utilized in watering plants and crops, particularly in the event of a dry spell.
The ceremonial distribution of the plastic hoses and plastic drums to each of the 12 mountain barangays was carried out in front of the Legislative Building of the City Hall. The items were received by the concerned barangay officials themselves.
Councilor Roberto Cabarrubias said the city has appropriated P5 million for such purpose to help the farmers improve both quality and quantity of harvest.
Acting Mayor Michael Rama is hoping that the farmers would take care of the properties and that these will help them increase productivity, so to uplift their economic condition.
Among the beneficiaries of the first batch of assistance from the city are farmers of barangays Sudlon 1 and II, Sinsin, Pamutan, Pung-ol Sibugay, Paril and Lusaran.
Paril barangay captain Casimiro Flores and Sinsin barangay captain Ramon Ilaya spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries and thanked the city government for helping their fellow farmers.
Some of the city’s mountain barangays have already come up with their own irrigation systems, but that they lack hoses to allow water to flow directly to their farms. — Rene U. Borromeo/MEEV NLQ (FREEMAN NEWS)
