Coastal area residents warned of big waves

CEBU, Philippines - Residents of coastal barangays in Cebu City - particularly Ermita, Suba, Pasil and Sawang Calero – have been advised to stay away from their houses during nighttime because of huge waves spawned by strong winds.

Weather forecaster Oscar Tabada went to City Hall yesterday and warned city officials about the impending threat to those living in the city’s coastal areas.

Acting mayor Michael Rama then relayed the warning to Councilor Gerardo Carillo, action officer of the City Disaster Coordinating Council.

During a meeting at the City Hall, Tabada said people living in coastal areas must be prepared if they decide to remain in their homes during nighttime as the waves are expected to be disastrous.

Tabada explained that the seawater along shorelines is high during midnight until dawn from 1.7 meter to 1.8 meter deep while huge waves are expected because of the winds packing at 48 kilometers to 65 kilometers per hour.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that tropical storm “Quedan” is still being experienced in the country, although it already weakened.

Carillo said the city is prepared and is willing to provide food to those who will be evacuated.

Last Saturday, the City Council declared the city under a state of preparedness and appropriated P10 million for those affected by the calamity. — Rene U. Borromeo/LPM   NLQ   (FREEMAN NEWS)
