CEBU, Philippines - The 24th Original Marian Song Festival was not a competition but an offering to the Blessed Virgin Mary in celebration of her birth anniversary the other day, this according to Amelita Guaren, president of the World Apostolate of Fatima Philippines.
In fact, no cash rewards were given to the singers, lyricists and composers who participated in the songfest. However, they received tokens in recognition of their efforts.
All 13 entries were original from the lyrics to the melody. Use of traditional Marian prayers as lyrics was highly discouraged though. Most of the compositions were in Sinugbuwano, this was also learned.
“Through the songs, we exalt and promote Mary’s virtues especially her humility so that people may imitate them,” Guaren said.
The songfest was held at the auditorium of the College Assurance Plan along Osmeña Boulevard, this city.
The WAFP and the Cebu Archdiocesan Division organized the event.
