DepEd to look into administrative liability of Carcar school officials

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) will look into the administrative liability of the principal and teacher of Can-asujan National High School in Carcar in connection with the death of an 18-year-old student, who was bludgeoned by his classmate over an alleged disagreement on a P10 class contribution. DepEd-7 director Recaredo Borgonia said he already ordered the DepEd Division of Carcar to look into the matter and look into the liabilities of the school officials.

John Carlo Lumba was taking a nap inside their classroom when his 15-year-old classmate repeatedly hit him in the head with a piece of wood, said police.Murder charges will be filed today against the 15-year-old boy, said Carcar police chief Supt. Teofilo Siclot. He said it would be up to the Provincial Prosecutor’s to decide whether to indict the suspect or not. Siclot said the minor remains in police custody since the local social welfare office has no holding center for minor offenders. Police said the suspect claimed he attacked Lumba after the victim threatened him for not paying the P10 contribution for the music recording on the CD that would be used for their dance presentation.

The minor allegedly did not pay because he has no money but Lumba reportedly told him, “mag-ihap ka ron og daghang bun-og (You will be counting bruises in your body).”

Feeling threatened, the suspect claimed he attacked Lumba while he was napping inside their classroom that caused the latter’s untimely death. — Jasmin R. Uy/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
