Masbate-bound vessel runs aground

CEBU, Philippines - A vessel of Trans-Asia that was bound for Masbate City ran aground near the Bantolinao Point at the Mactan channel while trying to fix a mechanical problem.

Initial investigation said the M/V Asia Indonesia left Cebu City around 6pm the other day when the vessel encountered a minor technical problem while approaching the Bontilao point, the part of Mactan channel where the Bontilao lighthouse is located.

The vessel master reportedly decided to stop the vessel so it can be properly inspected but the strong current at that time pushed the vessel to a shallow area where it hit muddy ground.

The M/V Asia Indonesia was carrying 181 passengers and some cargoes. The weather was also clear when the vessel left the port. 

The vessel master then decided to keep the passengers on board until the tide would be favorable for re-floating. The Coast Guard dispatched a rescue ship and placed a tug on standby.

At about midnight, the vessel was re-floated and was made to return to Cebu City with all passengers and cargoes safe and secure.

Some of the passengers decided to take the next trip to Masbate while the others were refunded of their fare.

Pinky Sy, wife of the owner of Trans-Asia, said the vessel was not damaged and will undergo re-inspection to ensure its seaworthiness. She said the vessel would be made to sail again once given clearance by Marina. — Emee C. Lucena/JMO     (THE FREEMAN)
