Habal-habal driver shot dead in Toledo

CEBU, Philippines – A 35-year-old habal-habal driver was shot to death by two unidentified men past 8pm Sunday in barangay Don Andres Soriano (formerly barangay Lutopan), Toledo City.

The victim was identified as Rey Villamonte, married, a resident of Dasmaseco village in barangay Don Andres Soriano. 

Investigation showed that Villamonte was riding his motorcycle when the suspects reportedly followed him on board another motorcycle. A little later, the man riding in pillion with the driver shot Villamonte until the latter fell off his vehicle.

Not satisfied, the gunman reportedly fired more shots at Villamonte even after the victim fell to the ground. The assailants immediately fled thereafter.

Eight empty shells and two slugs of a caliber .45 were recovered from the crime scene.

Supt. Julian Intoma, chief of police of Toledo City, said the killing was drug-related but they are reportedly looking into possibilities that it might be related to the stabbing incident with which Villamonte got involved in two months ago. — Christopher Gabriel C. Bonjoc/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
