Stiff penalties against Liloan vandals sought

CEBU, Philippines – The Sangguniang Bayan of the municipality of Liloan is considering the passage of an ordinance imposing stiff penalties upon people who willfully and maliciously damage public properties.

This after the barangay council of Tayud requested the town legislators for the passage of an ordinance that would penalize people who cause damage to barangay-owned or installed materials, signages, equipment and other properties.

Members of the municipal council have given weight to Tayud’s concern, adding that the same thing could happen to any of the municipal-owned properties.

Tayud barangay officials have expressed alarm over incidents that resulted in the destruction of properties. In particular, they cited in their resolution, that their clean and green program is adversely affected by such acts.

They suspect that minors might be involved in these incidents, but they would want to act in accordance with the law. They hope for a local ordinance on this which could serve as their basis in going after violators.

Since the reported incidents have also affected the town’s peace and order situation, the municipal council expressed support for Tayud’s efforts to penalize vandals.

The Duke Action Squad, named after Mayor Vincent “Duke” Frasco, for example, could respond to any such alarms or complaints because its members have been issued multicabs and motorcycles to help in the maintenance of peace and order. – Garry B. Lao/MEEV (THE FREEMAN)
