Liloan landfill needs survey, nod of DENR

CEBU, Philippines – The proposed sanitary landfill in barangay Calero, Liloan town needs to be surveyed and approved by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources before it can be used, said Liloan Mayor Vincent Frasco.

Frasco said he already sent communications to DENR requesting for the survey and is still awaiting the agency’s reply.

The proposed sanitary landfill in barangay Calero would replace the traditional open dumpsite that the town operates in barangay Sta. Cruz, which is environmentally hazardous and incongruent with the provisions of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

Frasco said a sanitary landfill would address the municipality’s growing garbage problem and is essential for Liloan’s vision to become a city.

The mayor explained that a landfill is best located on a flat land, and not on the steep terrains of the mountain barangays, thus, barangay Calero was chosen as a perfect location.

He, however, assured that the residents of Calero who would be affected by the project would be “taken cared of.”

It is a required procedure for solid waste to be segregated before these are brought to the sanitary landfill, or the final disposal facility. — Garry B. Lao/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
