Brgy garbage workers assured of honorariums

CEBU, Philippines – The 291 barangay garbage workers who are actively helping Department of Public Services personnel in cleaning the city of trash are already assured of their honorariums from the Cebu City government until the end of the year.

The Cebu City Council has already approved the release of the P9,154,810 budget for the additional honorariums of the garbage workers in 45 of the city’s 80 barangays.

Councilor Edwin Jagmoc, chairman of the City Council committee on public services, said the amount represents the additional honoraria of the barangay garbage personnel who only receive a monthly honorarium of less than P5,000.

Of all barangays, Guadalupe only receives a P500 additional honorarium for each of their barangay workers because the barangay already gives them a monthly honorarium of P4,500.

The council, however, instructed DPS chief Dionesio Gualiza to closely monitor the attendance and performance of the barangay workers because they should render at least eight hours of service a day.

Acting Mayor Mike Rama wants the collection of garbage throughout the city to be round the clock to keep the city always clean. Rama learned that the collection of garbage is done only during daytime which is why garbage piles up by the following morning.

At least 400 tons of garbage are collected throughout the city everyday, and city officials encourage the public to comply with the law to segregate their garbage before disposing of them.

Jagmoc said if the barangay officials will just comply with the segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable trash, the amount of garbage will be reduced. —Rene U. Borromeo/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
