Educators hold confab in Cebu

CEBU, Philippines - Over 80 educators are gathered at the University of San Carlos-main campus for the 8th UNESCO-Asia Pacific Network for International Education and Values Education General Assembly that kicked off yesterday.

The two-day assembly was brought to Cebu after more than many years of being held in Luzon. This year’s assembly theme is “Education for Sustainable Development: Awareness, Advocacy and Action.”

APNIEVE is a UNESCO-affiliated organization that is committed to the promotion of peace, human rights, democracy and sustainable development and intercultural understanding in the Asia-Pacific region.

Participants from Cebu were from different schools like University of San Jose Recoletos, University of San Carlos and St. Theresa’s College.

Lee Seunghwan, director for the Asia Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding in Seoul delivered the keynote address.

Seunghwan talked on how education, as an issue, is affecting everyone and how it is also important to see education for international understanding.

One of the highlights also of the activity was the launching of APNIEVE music book “Rainbow of Peace,” by Dr. Lourdes Quisumbing, the founding president APNIEVE. 

The book, which comes together with a CD, is a collection of 11 songs that promote values of non-violence, tolerance, ecological stewardship, and intergenerational equity.

Quisumbing said they have been trying to bring the general assembly in Cebu and they were happy for the positive turnout.

Different workshops are also in store for the participants today on core vlues of sustainable development, socio-cultural dimension on love and compassion, economic-environmental dimension, which include care and protection of the environment, creation spirituality and intergenerational equity. — AJ de la Torre/WAB (THE FREEMAN)
