DENR-7 Chief: All days should be Earth Days
CEBU, Philippines – An official of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas called on the public to “make everyday an Earth Day”.
Leonardo Sibbaluca, regional executive director of the DENR-7, said that through little actions we can still minimize the impact of climate change on the ecosystems and on human health.
The DENR chief cited alternatives on how to preserve Mother Earth. He recommended the 3Rs which stand for reduce, reuse and recycle, and the planting of trees as these sequester carbon monoxide from the air.
Another way to reduce the greenhouse effect is to buy energy-efficient products or those that do not use up as much energy.
One manifestation of global warming in the country is the trends of increasing number of hot days and warm nights but decreasing number of cold days and cool nights.
Another is the intense rains that have been more frequent, as well as the substantial amount of coral reefs here that have been affected by bleaching during the warm months. — Mark Z. Gantuangco, CNU MassCom intern/MEEV (THE FREEMAN)
