Program for valedictorians launched

CEBU, Philippines – Along with the signing of the memorandum of agreement between the Cebu provincial government and Taheico-Cemex, and the memorandum of understanding on the Argao-Sibonga issues involving oil explorations, respectively, Capitol also launched yesterday the “Pasidungog sa mga Valedictorian (Salute to the Valedictorians)” program for high school students who graduated on top of their class, academic year 2008-2009.

A total of 227 high school valedictorians, from both public and private institutions, from the entire province of Cebu were invited to the said launching at the Provincial Capitol. Proud parents, teachers and other personnel served as the spectators as Governor Gwendolyn Garcia gave honor and recognition to the valedictorians.

Department of Education-VII regional director Recaredo Borgonia congratulated the valedictorians for a job well done. He said that was the best time to celebrate for the “core of young Cebuanos” who will soon lead the province is getting stable.

In connection with this program, a summer workshop will be held this Sunday, April 19 which aims to “extend everything possible for the students to have a meaningful and fruitful learning experience”, he said.

The workshop will be at the Ecotech in barangay Lahug, this city. It will be a two and a half-day activity to enhance the performance and leadership skills of the students and to increase their awareness on their social responsibilities.

This is the first-ever activity initiated by the Capitol for high school valedictorians of the entire province. It is administered in cooperation with the DepEd-7 and the Advocates of Living Values Education, Inc.

“Nothing worthwhile comes easy and it is your choice to overcome or to be overcome,” Garcia said as she reminded the graduates that their achievements are blessings from God.

She added that the said summer workshop will show and expose the graduates to how the provincial government runs. “You deserve the chance to see how the government works, and works for you,” she said.

Moreover, Jethro Francisco, 16, a valedictorian from the Cebu Christian Institute International in Lapu-Lapu City, said that he is blessed to be chosen as one of those students who are honored by the governor.

He also did not expect for the summer workshop opportunity and feels excited to meet new friends.

Francisco anticipates, “Nindot. I hope that it will be enjoying.”
