Modest rites for Tres de Abril anniversary
CEBU, Philippines - More than a hundred people yesterday attended the simple celebration of the 111th anniversary of the Battle of Tres de Abril.
In his message, acting Mayor Hilario Davide III, told the attendees to honor and remember the men and women who fought for freedom and gave up their lives.
He said to be a Cebuano is not just a gift, or a burden, a liability or a justification for special treatment.
“Cebuanos have a responsibility, an obligation to preserve our rich heritage, to treasure it and to do our utmost for the development of our city and also for the future generation,” Davide said.
He said only two fellow councilors were present, councilors Roberto Cabarubias and Arsenio Pacaña, both coincidentally were descendants of Katipuneros.
Vice Mayor Michael Rama who is currently out of the country, is also a descendant of Filipino fighters.
There was a floral offering made by different participants within the short program. These included war veterans, senior citizens, boy and girl scouts, Knights of Columbus, Knights of Rizal, and barangay and city officials.
It was in April 3, 1898 when Cebuano revolutionaries led by Gen. Leon Kilat, fought against the Spaniards and drove them back to the Fort San Pedro.
One of the fighters was Gen. Arcadio Maxilom. – Ferliza C. Contratista/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
