CEBU, Philippines - The Mines and Geosciences Bureau and the National Bureau of Investigation apprehended five trucks hauling sand and gravel in barangays Lagtang and Pooc in Talisay City last March 26 and 31.
MGB-7 director Roger de Dios said the trucks were apprehended after the drivers failed to present legitimate delivery permits. The trucks were then brought to the Talisay City Police Station.
The owners of the apprehended trucks are Denis Ramos, Ernesto Abatayo, Helen Traya, Lucilo Basalo and Lin Sibyla.
But De Dios clarified that those apprehended would still be subjected to administrative investigation. However, criminal charges may be filed against them considering that the operations were done together with NBI.
MGB-7 and NBI conducted the operations owing to persistent reports of rampant illegal mining and quarrying operations in Talisay City and several areas in Compostela and Consolacion.
De Dios said the areas that would be inspected would remain confidential so as not to preempt any formal action. He, however, assured their investigations would be thorough and that no one will be exempted from the law.
“No one is exempted in our operations, maski politiko pa na sila,” De Dios said.
De dios said they decided to seek the help of NBI because it appeared that the local government units concerned reportedly still lack the capability to curb the reported illegal operations.
Before the five trucks, 21 trucks transporting without necessary receipts have been apprehended. — AJ de la Torre/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
